Algorithms

23 02 2010

A computer is not intelligent enough to do things by itself – it is only capable of doing what we tell it. The idea of an algorithm is to describe exactly how to do something so that any dumb person (or computer!) can do it without understanding how the person who wrote it was thinking.

Storage

8 01 2010

All computer systems need to store data. This is done:

  • Temporarily while a program is running.  This is stored in main memory.
  • Long-term to preserve programs and data while not in use.  This is called backing storage.

Programming and Application Packages

16 12 2009

Software is a set of electronic instructions that tell your computer what to do. Without software, a computer is like an airplane without a pilot. In this chapter we will review different licenses and also the importance for programmers to choose an appropriate programming language.

Operating Systems

4 11 2009

An operating system (OS) is a set of programs containing instructions that coordinate all the activities among hardware and software components of a computer system. It is like a shop keeper who keeps a shop in order by attending to customers, handling supplier deliveries, stocking the shelves, doing the bookkeeping, and so on.

The operating system relies on device drivers to communicate with each device in the computer. The operating system also contains instructions to run application software.
